Feet treat

I tend to get busier at work in the lead up to Christmas, as I am sure many of you also do. Twin that with part season, which basically means wearing heels every blinking night, essentially means my feet hurt.

Actually, they don't just hurt. They balls of my feet feel as though they have been set alight and they throb when I eventually take the blessed shoes off.
Well, that is all in the past for me, and could be for you also.

Moisturising your tootsies is not enough. You need an intensive and healing foot cream and I have found just the thing. The Ahava Mineral Foot Cream.

I want my feet to feel smooth, be nourished and maintain a soft texture and appearance. This cream achieves this.
It contains tea tree oil, which is anti-fungal, aloe vera which is healing and a number of oils, among them avocado and jojoba which soothes and nourishes.

Do your feet a favour and grab yourself some ASAP!

Sweet smell of success

Buying for mums is such a tricky thing.
We love them to bits, but they always says things:"You shouldn't have wasted your money on me", or worse still:"It's lovely" while relegating to the back of the wardrobe, never to be seen again.

But I think this Christmas I have cracked it.

After having tried it out, I have decided that Bobbi Brown's subtle, sophisticated, but distinctly Christmassy new fragrance, Bobbi's Party is the one for her.

I adore this scent. It is warm and spicy but not overpowering. The gentle aroma evokes Christmas and cosy evenings but doesn't smell like a Starbucks Gingerbread Latte. There is a hint of floral too- so it feels feminine but again, not sickly, because there is a touch of sandalwood there to bring it back to earth.

It's available throughout the UK in most department stores. In fact, save yourself a whole load of bother, order it online and click on the gift wrapped option!

Winter skin savers

So, it is pretty flipping chilly and I've got my coat and scarf out. In the coming weeks I will no doubt be wearing a hat and gloves too. At home, I have the central heating totally cranked up, in my car the heating is set at 24 celsius and at work, the radiators are on full blast.

Cosy as it is, this adds up to major trouble for my skin.

As you know, that makes me very angry indeed. I'm a big believer in keeping you skin tip-top, because after that the make up just looks so much better. But it is a real struggle and requires some tweaking from your ordinary routine to a new winter regimen.

Here are some of the products that are my winter essentials.

Dermalogica Ultra Calming Cleanser
This cleanser is really fabulous during this time of year. My face can feel pretty beaten up because of the chill, the wind and then the heat, but this cleanser really soothes the skin. And it cleans a treat. This is perfect for this time of year as it doesn't clog the pores, washes grime and make up away beautifully, and reduces redness.

Clarins Gentle Foaming Cleanser with Shea Butter
If I need a cleanser which is a tiny bit more enriching but still cleans like a dream, I turn to this rich and creamy Clarins wash. Goodness, it makes your skin feel so good and nourished that you don't need to rush and put your moisturiser on. A real treat and I tend to use it a few evenings a week.

Dermalogica Skin Hydrating Masque
Yes, I know, I love Dermalogica. But with good reason. The products are amazing, and this is a real wonder product in my view. I actually do not use it in the recommended way, which is slather it on, leave for 15 minutes and then wash off. I actually only use it in the morning and I like to smooth it on after washing my face, leave it to absorb and then apply my moisturiser. I use a blob about the size of a 5 penny piece. Skin hydration is vital - the skin cells plump up and as such your complexion is smoother, brighter and more youthful.

Avon Anew Clinical Lift and Firm Pro Serum
This is the serum that I like to use after I wash my face of an evening. The serum is seriously silky and glides onto skin beautifully. After application my face looks and feels much smoother and a lot firmer too! A real treat for tired skin.

Simple Kind To Skin Replenishing Rich Moisturiser
I really like this a lot. It is light but very moisturising, repairs and protects but is not greasy. It absorbs well and really is great for under my day make up. Big fan. It's not pricey at all so you can afford to splash out on other items like the facial wash or the masque. It also works really well with these other products. So don't be afraid to mix and match your skincare brands.

Waitrose Baby Bottom Butter
This is my winter skin saver secret weapon. I know it's for babies' bums, but to be honest it is such a dream cream I cannot live without it. While I know it doesn't have anti-ageing properties, I also know that patting a dab of this wonderful olive oil, lavender and chamomile-scented 'set oil' into my face of an evening after a particularly cold or windy day, makes my skin feel and look amazing. It's cheap as chips too and chemical-free!

I'm back!

A friend of mine has been peroxiding her hair for about 12 years.
You don't have to be a genius to know that her hair is crying out for help. It is dry, straw-like:desperate for some attention and care.
A month or two ago I gave her a pot of Trilogy Botanical Moisture Masque and she has never looked back.
The rosehip oil really softens and replenishes the moisture in every strand of hair, and the product even contains wheat amino acids which are proven to help rebuild and enhance the hair.
It really is a fabulous product if you hair is very dry, damaged or over-coloured and styled.
Now, I am not saying that my mate now has hair that Rapunzel would be envious of, but it certainly looks a lot better than the shocking rat's nest of a Barnet she had before!

I've got more eyeshadows than you can shake a stick at.
And while I love my black eyeliners, sometimes, I like to use a brighter colour - just to add a different accent of definition to my eyes and it can change my look.
So, when I came across Aveda's Colour Options Eyeshadow Transformer, I was over the moon!
It is a liquid and an applicator and you squeeze a couple of drops into the eyeshadow you want to use, dip the brush into it and apply as you like.
I really love it, because unlike dipping the brush in water, it doesn't dilute the colour, it actually intensifies it. It doesn't smudge and nor does it fade as the day goes on.

My hair needs a bit of extra loving at the moment.

It's at that stage where it needs to be a bit longer but it also needs a trim you see.
As a result, it needs a boost in terms of shine and general conditioning.

So, that is why I am using Aubrey Organic NuStyle Organic Detangler & Shine Booster.

It really smooths the hair and reduces frizz beautifully.
My damaged ends seems more refined and repaired and in addition it feels that my scalp and roots are more nourished.

All up, as with the rest of the Aubrey Organic range-this is a class product!

We all know someone who has been affected by breast cancer. Mums, sisters, cousins, aunts, friends, perhaps even you.

And October is traditionally the month where, all over the world, people extend their efforts to raise money and awareness.

The beauty industry has never been shy about supporting this cause and on October 1st, OPI launch a wonderful new polish - Pink of Hearts.

The shade is hot but not neon and it looks amazing. Plus it is s Shatter nail varnish: seriously on-trend!

On top of all that, every bottle you buy will see OPI donate £1 to The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity.

Go on - look glam and do some good!

I think eyes serums should be used when you turn 30.
There's no point in whacking it on with a trowel when you are 45 and expect beautiful, bright, crease-free eyes.
So, I have tried loads over the years and this is one I love because it is potent!

It is Darphin Lifting et Anti Rides Contour Des Yeux. Really fabulous and this eye seurm does give very quick results.

The area around the eye appears firmer and smoother within a week or so and the skin seems somehow brighter.
So, voila! get yourself one now!

I have been wearing heels a bit too much lately, and so when I get home and flick them off I feel nothing but a searing, burning pain. As though the balls of my feet have been set alight.
So I did a bit of digging around and came up with something that has put a smile back on my face and stopped the tootsies throbbing. It is B Organics Foot Balm.

Oh my. What a product. Calming, cooling, soothing - instant relief.
This product is not only organic and can be used by those suffering from eczema but it is also suitable for vegans, so ethically sound as well as simply marvellous!

Get on to their website to grab yourself a pot, www.b-organic.co.uk. Your feet will thank me!

My product of the day is not a beauty treatment
, tool or product, but it is something that will make your hair and nails look AMAZING!
I have noticed since I have begun eating jelly after my lunch (about two weeks) my hair and nails seem stronger.
So I asked around and asked a science-y friend of mine, who says that the gelatine helps strengthen them.
So there you go!

What's good enough for Raquel Welch is good enough for me!
So with that I mind I've been using Frownies.

If you've never heard of them, be prepared for a huge wake-up call and no more lines!

You stick the patches to your face, and the next morning, whip them off. And that's it!

I would recommend using them for a long period of time- they work within a couple of weeks but Frownies are about muscle-training and so, as with the gym, if you stop going everything falls to the floor again.
Also, if you you are in a new relationship, you might want want to give the Frownies a miss for a couple of nights, as he might think it a bit odd!

Anyway, for a serious change, stick to Frownies!

I have come across something that might make life that little bit easier.
I don't know if you, like me, resent having to buy razors. Whether you shave your legs or you just buy them for the man in your life, it's annoying. They are quite pricey and actually very wasteful.
Well, I have come across, Razor Sharp (www.razorsharpuk.co.uk) and it's great!

In essence it is a sharpener-so you push the razor AGAINST the usual shaving direction. Razor sharp cleans and sharpens the razor.
So rather than chucking the razor in the bin after a few shaves, you can use it a further 150 or so times!
Good value, saves you cash and reduces environmental waste. Blimey, who says the beauty industry is selfish?!

Are you thinking about Christmas yet?
Well, I am, as I have that many fussy people in my life, that it is a total mission to buy them things that they'll like, that they'll use and actually, that doesn't leave my skint until sometime in the late Spring.
So, for one of my lovely friends, I have already found her the perfect pressie.
She is fragrance fickle. She flirts with several different scents at any one time.
So, I have purchased her the vivabox from The Perfume Shop.
It costs £39.99 and contains 7 different lovely perfumes. The one I am giving to her contains,
  • BOSS Orange 50ml EDT
  • Beyonce Heat 50ml EDP
  • Paco Rabanne Black XS for Her 50ml EDT
  • Giorgio Armani Code for Women 30ml EDP
  • Emporio Armani Diamonds 30ml EDP
  • DKNY Be Delicious 30ml EDP
  • Carolina Herrera 212 VIP 30ml EDP

The Perfume Shop have a box for fussy men too, so fret not.
Anyway, just a thought if you need to buy a gift soon!

Brushes are a beauty bag essential.

It is crucial to have a great tool to get the most out of your products.
I am always on the look out for a good kabuki brush.
These brushes have become huge recently - since the rise of the mineral powder foundation, I suppose.
I've found a really great brush, which is available all over the country from Tesco and it is cracking value.
It's the ecotools kabuki brush.
It is super soft and gives a lovely finish to mineral powder foundation, but I also use one for bronzer actually, because it swirls around the face a treat.
Lovely!

I am a big advocate of Dermalogica, as you know.
And just recently, I tried a cleanser that I hadn't yet come across. I decided to give the Ultracalming Cleanser a go and, what a great decision!

What I love about this facial wash, is the soothing effect it has on my skin.
It has calmed the red bits around my nose (I've got a cold, you see) and really reduces the tightness that I sometimes feel.
Also, and this is a big plus, it's great for blokes too! The Other Half has taken to using it as it is great after a shave - very calming and soothing.

Get yourselves a bottle and let me know how you get on.

Boots update

You may remember my blog of August - the girl at my local Boots devastated me by telling me that my favourite foundation, No7 Intelligent Balance Mousse Foundation, had been discontinued - http://mybeautybagsecrets.blogspot.com/2011/08/oh-no-what-have-boots-done.html

Now, the fabulous people at Boots came back to me with this:
"Outspoken passion and persuasion from No7 fans has secured the return of No7 Intelligent Balance Mousse Foundation to Boots. The come-back is a result of hundreds of dedicated calling for the return of this star product and even setting up a facebook page to bring it back! With such high demand for its return, No7 re-launched the foundation the month so fans can get their hands back on this much loved product. It is available now on Boots.com, and will make a welcome return to Boots shelves nationwide from October."

Thank you Boots, thank you so much. My skin is counting down the days until October!

Have you ever heard of DHC? Don't worry if you haven't yet, but read on, because your skin routine will change for the better.

Deep Cleansing Oil is a water-soluble facial cleanser which unclogs your pores and hydrates your skin - all thanks to the Vitamin E and olive oil.

You massage it directly on to your skin - with no water. It melts away the makeup taking with it impurities and general yukkiness.

Once you've given your face a good old massage you simply rinse it all off with some warm water.
This is such a great product and it really does give you a deep clean. You will not regret buying this.

It won't surprise you to learn that I take the old slap off every night. But sometimes it is hard to get rid of those last vestiges of eyeliner or heavy mascara, isn't it?
The other half gets very cheesed-off when he goes into the bathroom the morning after the night before only to find some the tell-tale signs of my eye make-up on the white towels. Oops.

Anyway, this will never happen again as I have finally found an eye make up remover I really like, that works but doesn't blind me! It's Naked Skin's Blinking Lovely. Good name, eh?!

The clever folk at Naked Skin have come up with a really gentle but very hardworking eye make up remover. It contains cooling and soothing aloe vera and cleansing witch hazel too, so it is great for sensitive skin.

Grab yourself one and let me know how you get along with it! Post your comments below!

Oh yes. I have found a ROCKING eyeliner.
Prestige, Skin Loving Minerals Eyeliner is awesome!

If you want a liner that lasts, that shimmers, that is just boring, flat black, then get yourself one of these, or more than one!

The liner glides really smoothly so you don't end up with that jittery/stuttery liner, but a smooth a defined look.

If you want to go for a smudgy, sexy look then this os also great, because it is quite a 'soft' liner, you can really move it around. Weirdly though, if you want a sharp and defined line this also does the trick.

The colours are great too. You can go for agate, azurite, hermatite grey, jade, onyx and topaz.

Gaga faces facts

I love a bit of Gaga. She is funny, smart, brave and talented. And also, she loves plastering the slap on with gay abandon. In fact, there are very few celebs at the moment who trowel it on quite like she does.

So imagine my shock to see her this week with no make up on at all!

She's done a shoot and interview with Harper's Bazaar, thanks to mailonline.com we've been able to check it out long before the mag hits the stands. In it she talks about her look and what her make up says about her. Gaga says: "Whether I’m wearing lots of makeup or no makeup, I’m always the same person inside,".
Despite this she goes on to say: "I don't really view it as "natural" referring to not wearing loads of make up or dressing down.

"I think that artifice is the new reality. It's more about just being honest and sincere to the core of what you do."

"I think what has been lovely about my relationship with the public is that they expect something unexpected from me."

What can I say? I love her!

Fish but not foul!

You know something is well and truly part of the fabric of British society when The Sun do a story on it!

I love this story from thesun.co.uk from earlier this week about fish spas. Everywhere you go, all over the UK these little spas are popping up.

The Garra Rufa fish pedicure, or Doctor Fish pedi, is the latest beauty therapy to get everyone super excited.

The little fishies, which are native to Turkey and the Middle East, basically have tiny little teeth that eat your dead skin cells when you plunge your tootsies in the water.
It doesn't feel like they have teeth, you tend to be aware of a gentle sucking feeling at first, which is quite a strange sensation. I won't lie, not entirely pleasant. But that feeling does subside within the first 90 seconds.
Then you feeling nothing but total bliss.

I first came across this when the other half and I were travelling in Asia a few years ago. The craze hadn't reached dear old Blighty at that point, but my goodness, they were EVERYWHERE in Asia.
You couldn't walk down a street in Bangkok, or KL, Tokyo or Singapore without passing dozens. We became totally addicted, of course and had at least one a day. They even had one at Singapore airport and Hiroshima for goodness sake!

Anyway, they are great fun, very relaxing and leave your skin feeling remarkably smooth, so give it a go!

Let me know how you get on by posting a comment below this story!

This is such a cracking little product, you really will love it. But it's not a gloss, or a hair serum or even a foundation - this is one of the cleverest little things Aveda have come up with, ever!
It's the Aveda Essentials Environmental Compact.

If you are out for the night and only have a clutch bag with you, this is just the ticket. It holds a lipstick, two eye colours of a cheek colour or you could have a foundation and a face accent in it as well as the lippy.

The mirror is a good size, the compact is light and slender so it won't bulk out your bag. Go on, get one now because come Christmas, you'll be thanking me, I promise.

I know it should only be one, but I simply could not decide which one I loved best.

Scrubs are essential to keep the skin smooth, healthy and glowing. Some make the mistake of over-scrubbing, either by exfoliating every day or by scrubbing in the same way they would clean the oven. Don't. Really, you are not doing yourself nor your skin any favours.

Scrub no more than TWICE a week, max. Squeeze a blob about the size of a five penny piece onto your fingertips and gently in small circular movements work it around your face. I pay a bit of extra attention around my jawline and either side of my nose.

Now, the good bit, which scrubs can I not live without?
Well, my constant bathroom companion is Dermalogica's Skin Prep Scrub. Somebody introduced me to this about six years ago and I honestly can never thank that person enough. it is gentle to the dermis, but blimey does it get rid of the nasties - the lumps, bumps, spots, dry bits and so on.

I cannot praise this skin miracle-worker enough and there not a single negative I can think to say about it. It really is brilliant.

However, there is a new scrub that has had such a dramatic impact on my beauty regimen that I really rate it as highly as Skin Prep Scrub. It is Aubrey Organics Jojoba Meal and Oatmeal Mask and Scrub.

I haven't tried it as a mask yet - but I will.
The scrub, is dreamy.

The meal is ground quite finely so you feel the scrubbing effect but not the sandy-grainy feel that can sometimes put people off using scrubs. It is soothing but also gets stuck in there - any little imperfections and breakouts just go the next day. Naturally, if used a couple of times a week for a few weeks you will really notice a major difference in your skin.

Both these scrubs work - they really don't just do the trick, they really give your skin a 'lift' and leave you glowing.

Oh my Madonna!

I love Madonna.
As I child I scratched all my Madonna albums because I was dancing around a bit too energetically and a bit too close to the record player.

Her films aren't really my cup of tea, apart from Desperately Seeking Susan, but her video clips are marvellous.
I've loved her style and looks forever, but something has upset me recently.

What has happened to her face?

I realise she's had work done and has done for a fair while now. We all know that yoga doesn't make your face look 20 years younger.
But reading mailonline.com earlier in the week was a revelation. And not good one.
The photo. Really sad.

She looked like Ivana Trump meets Jerry Hall meets Sophie Dahl.

Please Madonna, Esther or whatever you call yourself. Stop.

Dry-skinned girls listen up. The hottest moisturiser for you at the moment is Caudalie Vinoperfect Day Perfecting Cream.

This is a really brightening moisturiser that is best used in the morning. It leaves skin feeling fresh and luminous and absorbs really quickly. I will say again though, this is for dry skin. Stay away if you have oily skin as this will not make you happy, I promise you.

It feels beautifully silky and can reduce the appearance of pigmentation and dark spots. Lovely.

Weird Science!

I really loved that film back in the day, but actually that's not what my post is about today.

I love reading stories about the weird and extreme beauty treatments of the stars. I was reading a story on mailonline.com about it and it totally cracked me up.

Simon Cowell takes a cocktail of vitamins and minerals via an IV drip, Demi Moore loves being sucked by leeches, Kylie and Gwynnie love snake venom moisturisers and Madonna loves nothing more than a placenta face mask. Nice.

So, what weird and wonderful treatments do you swear by?
Let me know by posting your comments at the end of this post and I'll share your stories in the next week or two!

Can't wait to hear from you!

Touch of Silver by Pro Voke is a really great hair product and it's not just for grey-headed women, although this is obviously the most straightforward reason using it.
But I have recently recommended it to a few of my blonde mates and they really adore it.

"It takes the brassiness out of just-coloured hair"

"It keeps me blonder for longer"

"It keeps my naturally blonde hair shiny and bright"

If you are going grey and have been dying your hair dark, then this is a good shampoo if you want to go a few shades lighter as it helps keep the colour and boost it at the same time.

Sleek Fish High Gloss Serum is my current favourite hair product. It is great for dry or damaged hair and makes your hair really shiny and yes, sleek.
I really love it and it is perfect if you blow dry your hair a fair bit, because you really need the extra gloss and protection from the heat.
Fish is a well-established and well-loved London salon and their products are fabulous - but I find them especially good for hair that needs a bit of extra loving.
Get yourself a bottle now!

Nail it!

I really like my nails - I know I go on about it a lot, but I do.

Now, I've tried lots of products to make them stronger, longer, whiter and harder but recently I've decided to try a few store cupboard faves to give them a bit of oomph.

Here they are:

Toothpaste
Apply a blob to your nail brush and scrub them clean! They'll be nice and clean, the flouride in the paste will make them feel tougher and also will help smooth out any ridges. Great!
Garlic
A friend of mine has just returned from Ecuador (jet-set, I know) and says they all rub a clove of garlic on their nails. It makes them super-strong. In fact, I have even heard it suggested that if you chop some up really finely and let it 'stew' in your clear nail polish it will turn it into super strengthening polish!

Lemon
The acid in the lemon makes your nails white and also gives them a sort of 'buff'. You can rub a slice on or if you are juicing a lemon for cakes or whatever, the two ends are great - don't chuck them or compost them right away, instead put your fingers in there and give the lemon a good old turn.

Olive oil
A tiny drop goes a long way. The olive oil moisturises the nail and softens the cuticles so your nails are more flexible. So rub a little bit on each nail.

Alka seltzer
Put a couple of tablets in half a tumbler of water, let them fizz away and then plunge your fingers in there for a few minutes. Give them a rinse and slather on some hand cream. White nails in an instant! This is great for smokers.

Milk
A glass of milk a day, or for that matter a yoghurt or a good spread of soft cheese, will really help your nails. The zinc and calcium really boost the strength of the nails.
